ReadRateReview is run by me, Jo; wife and mother of two boys, a qualified teacher and lover of books!
That’s my life now – but I am, and have always been an avid reader and critic of books, mainly fiction of all types – although of course I have my favourites!
In my former life(!) I studied English Literature to Postgraduate level, achieving both a BA Honours, and later a Masters degree so am well versed in detailed analysis of literature, and writing styles.
I am also a qualified teacher, and although not teaching in schools currently, I am of course a 24/7 teacher to my own two lovely boys, have regular contact with their friends and fellow students and am always keen to promote reading from an early age.
I am passionate about good, fun, engaging literature right from the very first introduction to the world of words, stories and poetry, something I feel has been lacking in the past, but in more recent years has been increasingly available to children.
For eight years with my husband we owned a popular online shop which included stocking a range of books, in our case specifically for factual instruction and for bedtime reading. I regularly looked through wholesale catalogues, selecting books to suit a particular audience and we worked very closely for a while with an Australian author of popular parenting books, being the only stockist in the UK for a short time.
For the promotion of our online shop (now sold on), I wrote a short bedtime story, which was subsequently illustrated and animated for publishing on electronic reading devices (copy and paste the link into your browser).
The story can be purchased for Kindle here – http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jemma-Night-Joanna-Windsor-ebook/dp/B006QAZIH8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454115352&sr=8-1&keywords=jemma+and+the+night
My interest in health, self-help and parenting books is a personal one, developed over the 13 years that I and my husband have been parents to our two wonderful, but challenging children diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome/ADHD and ADHD respectively. Over the years while coming to terms with the diagnoses, we attended a variety of courses on Autism, ADHD and Challenging Behaviours in an effort to better understand the conditions. Self-help books, particularly ways of coping with everyday anxiety and stress have become part of our everyday bookshelf, both for ourselves as adults, and for our children. I am always on the lookout for excellent advice and suggestions and to be able to review some of these books for others who are reaching out for help, particularly in these areas is very rewarding.
I am an active member of Goodreads.com and a regular visitor to their site, selecting books, looking at reviews and writing my own. It was here I was first inspired to begin my own book review website alongside my Goodreads and other online activity, and since doing so, the range of books I now read has widened extensively to include authors and genres I had never previously tried and it has been as much an education as a pleasure, keeping my mind engaged and active.
I hope my reviews might give some guidance towards finding your perfect read, but they are not THE definitive point of view on each book – they are my point of view.
Read, enjoy and make up your own mind!
