Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Initial reviews I’d seen prior to starting ‘Red Queen’ were a mixed lot, generally very good, with a couple of bad mixed in, so I wasn’t really sure what to expect. As it turned out, ‘Red Queen’ was a thoroughly good read and I really enjoyed it – to the extent of a full 5 star rating!

The ‘Red Queen’ of the story is Mare; a pickpocket from among the impoverished and powerless Red bloods, always just an onlooker to the wealth and privilege of the powerful Silver bloods, a chance encounter sees Mare elevated to a servant in the royal Silver household. As a servant and spectator at the Queenstrial, where the women duel for the Princes’ hands in marriage, Mare dramatically and unexpectedly discovers she has powers of her own, powers that could undermine and challenge the Silver’s claim to the throne. So begins an action-packed adventure as love, loyalties and betrayal take centre stage and Mare begins a terrible fight for her own life, for her family, and for freedom from the tyranny of the Silver rule.

Full of action and adventure, ‘Red Queen’ is a book I couldn’t put down until I had finished the last page! Now I look forward to the sequel…..
