A classic Young Adult romance with all the intensity and angst of young love.
Nate and Tali are drawn to each other; from the moment Tali spies Nate from her bedroom window, sitting on his doorstep playing his guitar and singing, she is smitten and it isn’t long before they become a couple. However, Nate hides a secret that haunts him, and which he feels will drive Tali away forever if she learns of it. He fears losing her and hurting her all at the same time, compounded by the confrontational behaviour of a former female friend of Nate’s who makes no secret of her hate and contempt for him.
Although the complicated ‘on again, off again’ romance that develops between them risks becoming a little repetitive, Jennifer Melzer holds it together and ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ is a nevertheless a compelling read.
I give this book four out of five stars.
